A Baker’s Life

Posted on: August 17th, 2017 by Harriet Low No Comments

I am really excited to finally reveal the cover to my new book, A Baker’s Life. This new book is really special to me as it gives me a chance to share with you the bakers, chefs and experiences that have inspired me over the years. Each chapter is filled with bakes that represent a different decade in my life, from learning the basics in my father’s bakery, to honing my pastry skills in some of the finest hotels around the world. The book includes recipes that I have been baking at home for years, including favourites such as garlic baguettes, chorizo & chilli Scotch eggs, my mum’s ginger biscuits and a gorgeous hazelnut cappuccino cake. I have also included photos from my family albums and some professional insights into what makes a great baker. I really hope that you will enjoy the book. It will be in shops on November 2nd, but you can pre-order it here. To accompany the book there will also be a four part series on Channel 4. More details on that to come . . .

For all those who have been asking when Bake Off will be starting, we can finally tell you that the first episode will be on Tuesday 29th August at 8pm.  I can’t wait to find out what you all think of the new bakers, who I promise are a very talented bunch this year.

Cars & Baking

Posted on: May 18th, 2017 by Harriet Low No Comments

Keen followers of my Instagram will know that I am a huge fan of all things car related. So I was so excited when the BBC has asked me to make a show all about cars. Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip sees me heading off to Europe  to find out all about several country’s character’s and how they are reflected in their attitude to cars and driving. I will be visiting Italy, Germany & France and driving lots of incredible cars, including a £2 million Huayra car in Italy, a classic 2CV in France and a VW Kombi Camper Van in Germany. The show starts on May 28th on BBC2. Keep an eye on my new Twitter account @hollywooddrives for more details.

For those you who aren’t as interested in cars as me, don’t worry I will be back doing what I do best – baking – later this year.  A Baker’s Life is a four part series for Channel 4. The show will see me visiting different kitchens and chefs who have guided me over the years. You will get an insight into my personal baking history, as well as feature some fantastic new recipes. The show will be on screens towards the end of the year, as soon as I know more details I will let you know.

And of course before then there’s the new series of The Great British Bake Off. More about that soon!

Road Trippin’ & City Bakin’

I hope you are all enjoying the new series of City Bakes. It is definitely one of the best things that I have ever filmed. Travelling to all these incredibly different cities and understanding not only their baking traditions, but also learning about their individual cultures and what makes each city tick has been so enjoyable. I have learned so much making the programme and came back buzzing with lots of different ideas. In episode 3 I am in Dublin learning about Soda Bread, meeting a potato fanatic who cooks with historic Irish varieties and as you can see from the picture above checking out some of the local seafood.

As well as travelling around for City Bakes I have also been whizzing around Europe for my show ‘Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip, which will be coming out on the BBC later this Spring. If you love cars as much as me and want to find out more then please follow me on Twitter @hollywooddrives

With Easter round the corner it’s definitely time to get some Hot Cross Buns in the oven! If you have never made your own before why not give my recipe a go. I started making them with my Dad, also a baker, when I was 9 years old. The addition of apples to the dough enhances the taste and lends a lovely, moist texture. And if you are a marzipan fan like me then check out the cake section as well for my Simnel Cake recipe. This classic fruit cake is traditionally baked at Easter: the eleven balls of marzipan on top represent Jesus’s disciples, minus Judas. It’s even more delicious if you make your own marzipan, but if you use shop brought I promise not to tell!

Happy Easter & Happy Baking!

2017 Plans

Posted on: January 24th, 2017 by Harriet Low No Comments

I hope that you have all had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed some seriously delicious festive food. My family and I had a very relaxing Christmas and we all indulged in our favourite recipes, including of course many, many mince pies. I was also lucky enough to visit the Alps for a spot of skiing, which was amazing despite a slight lack of snow.

The holidays now feel a long time ago and it’s back to the kitchen for me. I am in the middle of filming my new series of City Bakes for the Food Network. Last year we visited Palermo, Antwerp and Nicosia, and sampled some delicious waffles and mussels (not at the same time!), amongst many other local delicacies. This year I have the luck to be travelling to a few different locations in the US, as well as some other exciting destinations. I can’t wait to get cooking. The show will be out later this Spring and as soon as I know the dates I will let you know.  Until then keep an eye on my Instagram page where I will be posting pics from my travels.

When I am not travelling I am working on new products for my ranges which I can’t wait to share with you. I hope that those of you who have tried my ready to bake rolls and baking mixes have enjoyed them. I would love to know which products are your favourites? Tweet me @PaulHollywood or message me on Facebook to let me know.

Happy Baking!

More City Bakes

Posted on: November 10th, 2016 by Harriet Low No Comments

Sorry it’s been a while since I last updated my blog. But as you all know it’s been a very busy few months.

I hope that you guys enjoyed Bake Off and were pleased to see the fabulous Candice be crowned Bake Off Winner 2016. She really was an incredible contestant and a worthy winner, I look forward to seeing what she does next.

If you follow me on Instagram you will know that I have been lucky enough to have been travelling all over the place recently filming my new series of City Bakes for The Food Network. If you watched the last series you will know that the programme sees me travelling to cities round the world, meeting and learning from some truly brilliant local bakers. It’s really such a fantastic project to be involved with and I can’t wait to share it with you next Spring. Keep an eye on my Facebook page for details of when this show will air.

I want to thank everyone who has sent me such kind messages about my new ready mixes range. The feedback has been brilliant and I am glad you are all enjoying them all, (sounds like my gooey brownie mix is particularly popular). Keep sending me pics of your bakes and tag them with #hollywoodbakes on social media.

I can’t believe it’s nearly Christmas, can you? But with this chilly weather it definitely feels like time to bake a batch of mince pies and cosy up in front of the fire! Check out the recipe section of my website for my classic mince pies recipe and my indulgent frangipane mince pies. There are also a few Christmas Cake recipes: my classic cake, my White Christmas Cake which is a bit lighter, a chocolate brownie version for those that aren’t keen on the traditional option and of course my decadent Christmas Log.

I’m really proud of my new bakeware range and delighted that you all like it as much as I do. I’ve used my years of baking expertise to help design a range that includes all of the pieces that I love to use at home, including miniature bakeware, proving baskets and some fantastic accessories. If you haven’t had the chance to yet, take a look at the full range here. It would make a great a christmas present!

If you are looking for Christmas gifts for a baking-mad friend why not have a look at my new range of bakeware from Kitchencraft. I have designed all the pieces that I love to use at home, including miniture bakeware, proving baskets and some fantastic accessories. For full details of this range click here

As usual for me Autumn means lots of baking shows, which I love. It’s great to bake live and meet all you lovely bakers in person. At the end of November I will be at the Good Food Show Winter in Birmingham. If you are going to be there too, please do come and say hi.

Happy Baking!

It’s nearly Bake Off time!

Posted on: July 28th, 2016 by Harriet Low No Comments

It’s that time of year when the only question I ever get asked is ‘When is The Great British Bake Off starting?!’ I am afraid I can’t give you a date just yet, but I can tell you it’s very, very soon! As you know normally the show airs at the beginning of August, however, this year it will be slightly later due to the Olympics. Keep an eye on my Facebook, Twitter & Instagram and I will let you know the date as soon as it’s released. But what I can tell you is that yet again it’s going to be a brilliant series! This year I have really noticed that the bakers not only want to win, but also to challenge each other to be the best baker. They are really ambitious and you can really see it in the results. I can’t wait to hear what you think about the show and this year’s bakers.

I have been pretty busy in the run up to the show starting, launching my very own range of ready mixes. It’s been so exciting coming up with the mixes range and as well as including some gorgeous breads, including a Garlic & Herb Tear N’ Share and a Tomato & Thyme Bloomer, I have also included some of my favourite sweet treats, including a seriously gooey luxurious Chocolate Brownie and my famous Scone recipe. For more information click here. If you need something to bake these in you will be excited to hear that I have also launched my first ever range of bakeware. I have designed all the pieces that I use, including miniature bakeware, proving baskets and some fantastic accessories. I hope that you find something that will be useful for your kitchen. For full details of the range visit Kitchen Craft

Finally, if you haven’t got your tickets yet for the BBC Good Food Festival at Hampton Court this summer Bank Holiday it’s not too late. It’s going to be an incredible weekend and I will be there baking live on the Monday. For more details check out my calendar.

So here’s to a sunny summer full of fantastic bakes!
